As the calendar flips toward September, Westford Academy Football is deep into fall camp, and the Ghosts are beginning to take shape for the 2025 season. With energy high and competition strong across the roster, the early storylines have centered around the physicality up front, new leaders emerging on offense, and a relentless defensive unit that has impressed from day one.
Offensive Line: The Foundation
The strength of this Ghosts team is undoubtedly in the trenches. Junior JJ Wilson headlines a talented and deep offensive line group that has set the tone physically in camp.
At center, Brian Cross has taken control of the line calls, while Wilson, Malcolm Macdonald, and Alex Luhrs have been steady at the guard positions. Tackles Leo Koutsoukos, Kyle Durkin, and Jared Chrome round out a seven-man rotation that has impressed the coaching staff with depth and toughness.
“It all starts with our line. They’ve worked hard all summer, and this is a group that’s going to give us a chance to win every week,” said Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator Bruce Rich.

Quarterback & Backfield
Replacing last year’s league MVP Alex Wilson is no small task, but junior quarterback Jack Lafond has stepped into camp looking the part. At 6’2” and 190 pounds, Lafond spent the offseason preparing to lead the Ghosts’ offense.
Behind him, the running back position features a trio of playmakers. Senior Ben Chen and Junior Brett Moran return with valuable experience, while junior Declan Hevey has added an explosive element to the ground game.

Running Backs – Coach Mark McDermott
Receivers & Tight Ends
The Ghosts have a versatile set of targets in the passing game. Senior Teddy Hirbour, a multi-sport standout and leader on the basketball court, headlines the receiving corps. Carter Hesse, Liam Flanagan, and Nolan Kropp have each shown flashes during camp, giving Lafond multiple options on the perimeter.
At tight end, JJ Welsh and Dante Vasiliu have brought consistency and toughness, helping both in the run game and as red-zone threats.

Tight Ends – Coach Bruce Rich Sr.
Defense: Relentless Pursuit
Defensive Coordinator Coach G has liked what he’s seen early from his group, particularly their energy and pursuit.
“We’re flying to the football. This group has bought into the idea that effort is everything, and when 11 guys chase the ball, good things happen,” Coach G said.
Like on offense, the defensive line anchors the unit. JJ Wilson and Aiden Fitzpatrick will set the edge at defensive end, with Macdonald, Chrome, and Koutsoukos bringing power inside.
At linebacker, Brett Moran and Jhavian Rivera bring experience in the middle, while Vasiliu and Hesse add athleticism on the outside. Cam Croome and Ryan Goucher provide additional depth and versatility.
In the secondary, Declan Hevey has transitioned smoothly into the free safety role. On the corners, senior leader Teddy Hirbour and Sam Bramanti will be counted on to lock down opposing receivers.

Leadership Announced
The Ghosts recently elected their 2025 team captains, a group that represents both toughness in the trenches and playmaking ability across the field. Leading this year’s team will be Brett Moran, JJ Wilson, Ben Chen, Dante Vasiliu, Teddy Hirbour, and Brian Cross.
“These guys embody what it means to be a Ghost — they’ve earned the respect of their teammates through hard work, toughness, and accountability,” Coach Rich said.

The Road Ahead
The Ghosts’ physicality at the line of scrimmage has stood out, and with new leaders stepping into big roles, Westford Academy enters the season with excitement and optimism. The development of these first-time leaders will be key as the team navigates a challenging schedule.
Before the regular season begins, WA will get one final tune-up in a scrimmage against North Andover, a matchup that should test both sides of the ball. Then, all eyes turn to September 12, when the Ghosts open at home against Lowell under the lights — the first true test of the 2025 campaign.
“Our goals are always the same — compete for the league and make a run in the postseason,” Coach Rich said. “This team has the work ethic and toughness to do that.”
